Focus on your Feet

Focus on your Feet

Take a moment to think about the distractions that are surrounding you, right now, at this very moment.

Ready, set, go!

Did you ironically get distracted from finding your current distractions like me? I often find myself starting one thing, and easily get caught up in other ideas around me. While you are trying to accomplish task A, you can’t stop thinking about how you still need to accomplish task B, C, D, E, etc.  Is it truly possible to stop thinking about everything and spend time devoted to just one thing?

We can accomplish more in ourselves when we face the distractions we have in our life and just zone-out. Even though our culture enforces multitasking as a headline skill to be listed on your resume, it’s not always the answer. I’ve never felt 100% confident about anything I have done unless I could look back and think “I gave it everything I had”. How can you recognize when you start losing your pace and refocus on your goal in the present moment?

I try and practice this when I hike.

Just

focus

on

your

feet.

Move one in front of the other, and repeat. Don’t keep telling yourself you still need to get to XYZ elevation and still go so many miles. I try and recognize when other thoughts start creeping in my head – my brain rambles and reminds me that I have 5 loads of laundry, I need to finish a project for work, I still need to edit images from weeks ago…the list never ends. But when I re-center and go back to my focus, I start seeing clearer. I notice new things as the trail opens up and I am truly in the moment. I am more productive.

When the rest of my “to-do” list starts to pull me away from the task at hand, I have to refocus. I have to find my feet. One in front of the other, and repeat. Eventually, you make it to the top when you don’t overthink it or overwhelm yourself.
